2008 was the year in which the US and NATO woke up to the possibility of failure in Afghanistan – a failure that would not only cement the Taliban’s resurgence but also spell disaster for neighbouring Pakistan and the NATO alliance.

With the passage of contentious civil nuclear pact with China over an unresolved frontier and a shocking terrorist attack in Mumbai in late November, India has strategic and military challenges ahead. Plus, the Beijing Olympics made China the focus of the world’s attention in 2008 and the games seemed to crown China’s arrival as a major power – not just economically but also militarily. Also, North Korea’s supposed testing of IRBM missiles has increased military tensions which could lead to future aggression from the US.
